High-protein meals when you cannot face food
On low-appetite days the useful measure is protein per mouthful, not protein per meal. Liquid and cold foods generally go down when hot cooked meals will not: a protein shake gives 20 to 25 grams with no chewing, a Greek yoghurt pot around 15, two eggs about 12, and a tin of tuna around 25. Five small hits across the day is far more achievable than three proper meals.
The rules that make it work
- Cold before hot. Hot food carries smell, and smell is what turns people off on a bad day.
- Liquid before solid. Sipping a shake over an hour asks nothing of your appetite.
- Small and frequent before large and few.
- Nothing that requires cooking, because you will not cook.
- Have it already in the fridge. Decisions are the first casualty of feeling rough.
Assembly jobs, not recipes
| What | Rough protein | Effort |
|---|---|---|
| Protein shake made with milk | 30–35 g | Shake a bottle |
| Greek yoghurt with a spoon of protein powder stirred in | 30 g | One bowl |
| Cottage cheese on two oatcakes | 15 g | None |
| Tinned tuna or salmon straight from the tin | 25 g | A fork |
| Two boiled eggs, cooked in advance | 12 g | Peel |
| Skyr with a handful of berries | 18 g | None |
| Cold roast chicken from yesterday, 100 g | 30 g | None, if you cooked it on a good day |
| High-protein milk, a 500 ml bottle | 20 g | Drink it |
| Edamame from frozen | 11 g per 100 g | Two minutes |
A realistic bad day
Shake at breakfast (30 g), yoghurt mid-morning (17 g), tinned fish at some point in the afternoon (25 g), high-protein milk in the evening (20 g). That is 92 grams without cooking anything or sitting down to a meal. On a day you thought you would eat nothing, that is the whole job done.
Fluids
Appetite suppression reduces how much you drink as well as how much you eat, and dehydration makes fatigue, headaches and constipation worse. Keep something to drink within reach rather than relying on thirst.
Plan for it on a good day
The single most effective thing is shopping for the bad days while you are having a good one. Recompose does this by suggesting different foods depending on where you are in your shot week, so the fridge is stocked before you need it.
Common questions
What should I eat when I have no appetite on Mounjaro?
Cold, liquid and small. Protein shakes, Greek yoghurt, skyr, cottage cheese, tinned fish and boiled eggs all deliver meaningful protein in a small volume with no cooking. Five small servings through the day is usually more achievable than three meals.
Is it bad to skip meals on a GLP-1?
Missing meals occasionally when your appetite is suppressed is common. The concern is not the missed meal so much as consistently low protein across the whole week, which is associated with losing more lean mass. Aim for a protein floor even on the days you eat least.
