What to eat on Mounjaro
Eating well on Mounjaro is less about a fixed meal plan and more about matching food to the day. In the first two or three days after your injection, prioritise small, cold, protein-dense foods and fluids. From day three onwards, when appetite returns, eat proper meals built around a protein source, vegetables and some slow carbohydrate, and use those days to cook for the ones ahead.

The week, in food
| Day | How it tends to feel | What to eat |
|---|---|---|
| Injection day | Fairly normal | Eat as usual. Avoid a very large or very rich evening meal. |
| Days 1–2 | Lowest appetite, most nausea risk | Cold and liquid: shakes, yoghurt, skyr, tinned fish, eggs. Sip fluids constantly. Protein floor, not target. |
| Day 3 | Coming back | Reintroduce proper meals. Soup with added protein, eggs on toast, chicken and rice. |
| Days 4–5 | Best days of the week | Full meals: protein, vegetables, slow carbs. Batch-cook for the suppression days ahead. |
| Days 6–7 | Hungriest, cravings likeliest | Structure and volume: big salads with protein, soups, plenty of fibre. Plan meals rather than improvise. |
What tends to sit badly
- Very fatty or fried food, particularly on suppression days: commonly reported as the worst offender.
- Very large portions, because gastric emptying is slower and volume lingers.
- Alcohol, which many people find hits harder and settles worse than it used to.
- Fizzy drinks, which add volume you do not have room for.
What tends to help
- Protein first at every meal, before anything else on the plate.
- Fibre and fluid, because constipation is a common complaint.
- Eating slowly and stopping earlier than you think you should.
- Not lying down straight after eating, if reflux is an issue for you.
The pre-shot days are where plans usually break
Hunger is strongest in the day or two before the next injection, and that is when a week of good eating tends to come undone. It is far easier to handle with food already prepared: the point of cooking extra on your return days. High-volume, high-protein meals (a large salad with chicken, a big bowl of soup with lentils) fill you up without a lot of energy.
Common questions
What foods should I avoid on Mounjaro?
There is no prohibited list, but people commonly find fatty and fried food, very large portions, alcohol and fizzy drinks sit worst, particularly in the first days after an injection. What bothers you is individual: pay attention to your own pattern.
How many meals a day should I eat on Mounjaro?
Whatever gets your protein in. On low-appetite days, four or five small servings is usually more realistic than three meals; on the days appetite returns, normal meals work fine.
Should I count calories on Mounjaro?
Appetite suppression usually creates a deficit without counting, and adding deliberate restriction on top can make it harder to get enough protein. Recompose tracks protein as a floor to reach rather than calories as a limit, but if your care team has advised calorie targets, follow those.
