Protein target and food logging
Recompose sets you a daily protein target based on your body and your goal, and gives you three ways to hit it: search a food database, scan a barcode, or add a quick estimate in grams. The target is a floor to reach rather than a limit to stay under, and on low-appetite days the app suggests small, dense foods instead of asking for volume you cannot manage.
Where the food data comes from
Food search runs on CoFID: the Composition of Foods Integrated Dataset, the UK government reference for what is in British foods. It is the same source behind most UK nutrition labelling work, which matters when you are trying to hit a target accurately rather than approximately. Packaged products from the UK and India come from Open Food Facts, with their barcodes, so scanning works in the shops in both. Sources and licences are listed on the licences page.
Three ways to log
- Search: type a food, pick a portion.
- Scan: point the camera at a barcode.
- Quick add: a straight number of grams of protein, for when you know roughly and logging the whole meal is more than you have in you.
The quick add exists because on a bad suppression day, an app that demands a full food diary gets closed. A rough number logged beats a perfect number abandoned.
The target moves with your week
On days when appetite is lowest, Recompose shows you protein-dense options with the least volume (Greek yoghurt, eggs, fish, a shake) rather than a plate of food you will look at and give up on. On return and pre-shot days, when appetite is back, it leans towards whole meals that will actually keep you full. See how much protein to aim for.
